2013 Father and Son Blend
Holden-Mapley Vineyard, Alexander Valley, CA
Inaugural release composed of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in roughly equal proportions. The parent-child relationship of these grape varietals inspired us to name this wine “Father and Son,” and the name also honors our families who continue to support us throughout our adventures. Subtle red and black fruit flavors with significant oak influence adding notes of black pepper, coffee, chocolate, vanilla, and cinnamon. All grapes for this wine sourced from the family-owned Holden-Mapley Vineyard in Alexander Valley AVA along the Chalk Hill Road. Small hand-made production with 840 bottles produced.

John Gilman, in the September-October issue of his publication A View from the Cellar, writes “The 2013 Terragena ‘Father and Son Blend’ is produced from purchased grapes from the Holden-Mapley Vineyard in Alexander Valley and is comprised of a mix of fifty-four percent cabernet franc and forty-six percent cabernet sauvignon. The wine… offers up a pure and nascently complex bouquet of cassis, dark berries, cigar ash, a fine base of dark soil tones, just a whisper of the chipotles to come and a touch of cedar. On the palate the wine is medium-full, pure and complex, with a nice core, impressive intensity of flavor, suave, modest tannins and lovely length and grip on the low fat and classy finish. This is not a big wine, but it is long on personality and complexity and really is very enjoyable to drink now, with the potential to also age very nicely over the mid-term.” He recommends drinking this wine now or aging it until 2030 or later, and he rated it with 90+ points.
In his blog, Soifknows, Stephen McConnell writes of our 2013 Father and Son Blend, “Light bright ruby out to tiny clear edges. …One of those wines you just want to smell forever and ever. Rich and round fruit with a solid streak of minerality begs you to taste it. …This particularly lovely blend gives nod to the lineage of Cab Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon–of which the former makes the larger contribution, in feel AND taste. A brilliant juxtaposition Loire and Bordeaux, blending brilliant vegetal CF nuances with just the right amount of Cabernet lushness. If you prefer big flabby jam-bomb cabs utilizing every tool in the bag to elicit concentration, this is NOT a wine for you. But if you lush out on vibrant, delicate Cab Franc spice and dedication to solid fruit, this …is your new poster-child for balanced wines. In the mouth, the minerality never takes a break, running ruby grapefruit thru the fruit so visceral, so stunningly bright, blackberry and vivid, never bogged down by concentration and alcohol. Full and round and yet still so ethereally light and elegant, and absolutely PERFECT example of what is fortunately the new trend in low-alcohol, yet very polished red wines. I am positively blown AWAY by how good this wine is. So light of texture and color, and yet so jam-packed FULL of everything wonderful in a red wine.” Read the full review here.
The Wine Guys write about our Father and Son Blend, “California is known for the big, bold, and the fruity, yet we recently were introduced to a blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet [Sauvignon] that hailing from California took us back to old-world restraint with beautiful floral expression. Notes of red and blue florals, bright red currant, spice box, vanilla, red cherries, dry soil, blackberries, pepper, and a hint underbrush. The mouthfeel is bright, and intense, nicely structured, with a fresh and floral finish with a punch of acid and well integrated tannin. For the fruit fans, this isn’t a wine for you, but for the old world balance fans this may be right up your alley. You won’t get palate fatigue with this 12.7% alcohol red blend. A refreshing example of restraint of California fruit here. Enjoy over the next 7-10 years. | 90 points.”
